It is acknowledged that the foundation dam lines play a more important role than sire lineages in successive generations of breeding.This becomes easier to see if some identification of the dam lines is established. The author has taken the initiative to do so for the main 15 Belgian foundation mare lines (originally 5 came from the Holland, 5 from France, 2 from Hannover, 3 are unknown), by developing a number system for each of these families. A clear survey of the direct relatives of the Belgian 'stars': Darco, Egano, Big Ben, Arabian,and Jus De Pomme.
